SPEED REGULATIONS FOR THE TRAILER

How fast can you drive with a trailer? The follow-on question is whether the trailer has vehicle license plates? If so, the quick answer is 60 km/h, otherwise it is 30. But there are certain limitations. Read more here so we can go through everything.

CHECK THE REGISTRATION CERTIFICATE

This presumes that the trailer has been inspected, any tax due is paid, and the towing vehicle’s registration certificate permits towing the trailer's weight.

WHAT IS CONSIDERED A LIGHT TRAILER?

  • Trailers with a total mass of 750 kg (=including load) or
  • Trailer where the total mass of the towing vehicle and trailer is not greater than 3.5 tonnes (=including load and passengers).
(The requirement regarding the total trailer mass not exceeding half the towing vehicle’s unladen mass was rescinded in 2013.)

ALWAYS REMEMBER:

  • Trailers that can be driven at 80 km/h may also be driven on a motorway.
  • Slow driving vehicles, trailers, (including roller boat trailers) must display SMV (LGF) signs.
  • For winter road conditions If the towing vehicle has studded tires, the trailer must also have these. If the towing vehicle has regular winter tires, the trailer may have either studded or regular tires.

THREE DIFFERENT SPEED LIMITS PERTAIN TO THE TOWING OF TRAILERS IN ADDITION TO GENERAL SPEED LIMITS.

  • 30 km/h. 30 km/h is the maximum permissible speed for slow-moving vehicles, so-called towed implements, e.g. launch and recovery trailers. These are non-registered vehicles lacking brakes and suspension that must always display SMV (LGF) signs. Direction indicators are always required on public roads, and after dark, lights.
  • 40 km/h. 40 km/h is the speed limit for unbraked trailers that do not fulfil the conditions below.
  • 80 km/h. 80 km/h is the speed limit for unbraked trailers that fulfil the conditions below, and braked trailers.

Unbraked trailers. Registered unbraked trailers with suspension with a total weight that does not exceed half the towing vehicle’s kerb weight (however not above 750 kg) may be towed at 80 km/h.
